Patagornithinae was named by Mercerat (1897).

It was assigned to Phorusrhacidae by Alvarenga and Holfing (2003), Gould and Quitmyer (2005).

Palaeociconiidae was named as a family.

It was reranked as the subfamily Palaeociconiinae by Mourer-Chauviré (1981); it was synonymized subjectively with Patagornithinae by Alvarenga and Holfing (2003).

It was assigned to Cariamae by Cracraft (1968); and to Phorusrhacidae by Mourer-Chauviré (1981).
Tolmodinae was named by Kraglievich (1932).

It was synonymized subjectively with Patagornithinae by Alvarenga and Holfing (2003).
