Hemeroscopus was named by Pritykina (1977). It is the type genus of Hemeroscopidae.

It was assigned to Hemeroscopidae by Pritykina (1977), Carpenter (1992), Ren (1995), Bechly et al. (1998), Ueda et al. (2005), Zheng et al. (2015) and Nam and Kim (2016).
