Ischnoneura was named by Brongniart (1894). Its type is Leptoneura oustaleti. It is the type genus of Ischnoneuridae.
It was assigned to Cnemidolestodea by Béthoux (2005), Béthoux (2007); and to Ischnoneuridae by Handlirsch (1906), Handlirsch (1919), Handlirsch (1922), Carpenter (1992), Rasnitsyn and Aristov (2013).
