Meselcana was named by Sharov (1968). It is the type genus of Meselcaninae.
It was assigned to Elcanidae by Zessin (1987); to Permelcanidae by Sharov (1968) and Carpenter (1992); and to Meselcaninae by Gorochov (1989), Gorochov (1995), Gorochov (2005) and Gorochov (2013).
