Elodophthalmus was named by Kirejtshuk and Azar (2008). Its type is Elodophthalmus harmonicus. It is the type genus of Elodophthalmidae.

It was assigned to Elodophthalmidae by Kirejtshuk and Azar (2008), Cai et al. (2024).
