Geropteron was named by Riek (1984). Its type is Geropteron arcuatum. It is the type genus of Geropteridae.

It was assigned to Eugeropteridae by Riek and Kukalová-Peck (1984), Brauckmann and Zessin (1989); and to Geropteridae by Petrulevičius and Gutiérrez (2016).
