Axelrodiellus was named by Zherikhin and Gratshev (2004). It is the type genus of Axelrodiellini.
It was assigned to Eurhynchinae by Zherikhin and Gratshev (2004), Wolf-Schwenninger and Schawaller (2007); and to Axelrodiellini by Legalov (2012), Legalov (2015).
