Mesophlebiidae was named by Tillyard (1916). Its type is Mesophlebia.
It was corrected as Mesophlebiinae by Tillyard (1916), Bechly (1997); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Odonata by Carpenter (1992); it was synonymized subjectively with Triassolestidae by Nel et al. (2002).
It was assigned to Anisoptera by Tillyard (1916); to Archizygoptera by Tillyard (1922); to Anisozygoptera by Tillyard (1923), Cowley (1942); to Odonatoptera by Nel et al. (1993); to Odonata by Nel and Paicheler (1994); to Triassolestidae by Bechly (1997); and to Lobodonata by Tierney et al. (2020).
