Proeuthemis was named by Nel and Jarzembowski (1996). Its type is Proeuthemis pritykinae.

It was assigned to Euthemistidae by Nel and Jarzembowski (1996); and to Sphenophlebiidae by Bechly (1997), Bechly (2007).
