Taxonomy
Dichentomum complexum was named by Carpenter (1926). Its type specimen is MCZ 2792, a wing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Elmo, MCZ 1925 collection, which is in an Artinskian pond limestone in the Wellington Formation of Kansas.

It was synonymized subjectively with Dichentomum tinctum by Carpenter (1932).
