Taxonomy
Drepanopterus was named by Laurie (1892) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov D Emsi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 360]. It is not extant. Its type is Drepanopterus pentlandicus. It is the type genus of Drepanopteridae.

It was assigned to Stylonuridae by Størmer (1955); to Eurypterida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Drepanopteridae by Lamsdell et al. (2010), Dunlop et al. (2013), Dunlop et al. (2020), Lamsdell (2025).
