Nephrolenellus was named by Palmer and Repina (1993) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tojo-l]. Its type is Olenellus multinodus.
It was assigned to Olenellidae by Whittington et al. (1997); to Bristoliinae by Palmer and Repina (1993), Palmer (1998); to Biceratopsinae by Lieberman (1999); to Olenellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Biceratopsidae by Webster (2007).

Third thoracic segment macropleural, with extremely long pleural spines; tips posterior to end of thorax. Prothorax of 13 segments; opisthothorax of at least 17 segments.
