Rhaphidiopsis diversipenna was named by Scudder (1893). Its type specimen is Coll Clark 179, a wing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Lockonosett Mine, Cranston, which is in a Westphalian terrestrial horizon in Rhode Island.
