Homagnostus was named by Howell (1935) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-l Cm Fran-l; Type species: Agnostus pisiformis obesus [Belt]].

It was reranked as Agnostus (Homagnostus) by Henningsmoen (1958).

It was assigned to Agnostus by Henningsmoen (1958); to Agnostidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Agnostida by Sepkoski (2002).
