Elcana britannica was named by Handlirsch (1906). It is an impression. Its type locality is Binton (Museum of Practical Geology collection), which is in a Hettangian marine limestone in the United Kingdom.
It was synonymized subjectively with Elcana liasina by Zessin (1987); it was recombined as Archelcana britannica by Sharov (1968), Heads et al. (2022).
