Taxonomy
Psilocephala hypogaea was named by Cockerell (1909). Its type specimen is AMNH 18853, an exoskeleton (complete fly), and it is an impression. Its type locality is Florissant (Cockerell Collection), which is in a Chadronian lacustrine - large shale in the Florissant Formation of Colorado.
It was recombined as Taracticus hypogaeus by Hauser and Irwin (2005).
