Taxonomy
Litophlebiidae was named by Hubbard and Riek (1978). Its type is Litophlebia.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Palaeoptera by Carpenter (1992).

It was assigned to Heptabranchia by Willmann (2007); to Permoplectoptera by Staniczek et al. (2011); and to Litophlebioidea by Hubbard and Riek (1978), Sroka et al. (2014).
