Taxonomy
Thaumatoneurinae was named by Tillyard and Fraser (1938). It is extant.

It was reranked as the family Thaumatoneuridae by Bechly (2007), Bechly (2010) and Nel and Fleck (2014).

It was assigned to Pseudolestidae by Nel and Paicheler (1994); to Caloptera by Wappler (2003); to Dysagrionidae by Rust et al. (2008); to Zygoptera by Bechly (2010); and to Amphipterygoidea by Bechly (2007) and Nel and Fleck (2014).
