Heteroptilon was named by Carpenter (1976). Its type is Heteroptilon costale. It is the type genus of Heteroptilidae.

It was assigned to Heteroptilidae by Carpenter (1976) and Carpenter (1992); and to Tillyardembiidae by Aristov (2020).
