Taxonomy
Heteroptilon costale was named by Carpenter (1976). Its type specimen is MCZ 5878, a forewing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Elmo, MCZ 1927 collection, which is in an Artinskian pond limestone in the Wellington Formation of Kansas. It is the type species of Heteroptilon.
