Lycocercidae was named by Handlirsch (1906). Its type is Lycocercus.

It was assigned to Palaeodictyoptera by Handlirsch (1906), Handlirsch (1906), Handlirsch (1919), Handlirsch (1922), Demoulin (1960), Kukalová (1969) and Carpenter (1992); and to Eugereonoidea by Prokop and Ren (2007).
