Polycreagra elegans was named by Handlirsch (1906). Its type specimen is USNM 38705/6, a wing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Cranston, which is in a Westphalian C terrestrial siliciclastic in the Rhode Island Formation of Rhode Island.
