Leiostegium was named by Raymond (1913) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-l O Trem-u Sepkoski's reference number: 16,795]. Its type is Bathyurus quadratus.
It was assigned to Corynexochida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Leiostegiidae by Jell and Adrain (2002) and Fortey and Bruton (2013).
