Emydops oweni
Taxonomy
Emydops oweni was named by Fröbisch and Reisz (2008). Its type specimen is SAM-PK-3721, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Avonleigh, which is in a Wuchiapingian floodplain mudstone in the Balfour Formation of South Africa.

Reisz 2008 | Tusked or tuskless emydopid dicynodont referable to the genus Emydops, but distinguishable from the senior synonym E. arctatus of the type species E. minor by the following autapomorphies: absence of the small round foramen in the maxilla lateral to the postcaniniform keel, presence of a distinct ventrolaterally projecting pterygoid flange, and the diagnostic shape of the lateral dentary shelf strongly overhanging the mandibular fenestra with convex dorsal and concave ventral surfaces. |
