Ankylosphenodon was named by Reynoso (2000). Its type is Ankylosphenodon pachyostosus.
It was assigned to Opisthodontia by Cau et al. (2014); to Sapheosauridae by Reynoso and Cruz (2014); and to Sphenodontidae by Reynoso (2000), Apesteguia et al. (2012) and Herrera-Flores et al. (2018).
