Apatolichas was named by Whittington (1963) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u Sepkoski's reference number: 774].

It was assigned to Tetralichinae by Thomas and Holloway (1988); to Lichidae by Fortey and Droser (1999) and Jell and Adrain (2002); to Lichida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tetralichini by Pollitt et al. (2005).
