Ellipsotaphrus was named by Whittard (1952) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l O Ashg Sepkoski's reference number: 2,378,726]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Cyclopygidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002).
