Macrotermes was named by Holmgren (1910). It is extant. It is the type genus of Macrotermitinae.
It was assigned to Termitinae by Burnham (1978); to Termitidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Macrotermitinae by Snyder (1949), Nel and Paicheler (1993), Krishna et al. (2013), Hellemans et al. (2024).
