Podonomius was named by Kalugina (1985). It is the type genus of Podonominae.
It was assigned to Chironomidae by Kalugina (1985); and to Podonominae by Ansorge (1996), Lukashevich and Przhiboro (2011) and Ashe et al. (2024).
