Welleraspis was named by Kobayashi (1935). Its type is Liostracus jerseyensis.

It was assigned to Lonchocephalidae by Westrop (1992); to Catillicephalidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Asaphida by Sepkoski (2002).
