Taxonomy
Bellerophon urii was named by Fleming (1828) [Bellerophon Urii]. It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Euphemites, Euphemus.
It was corrected as Bellerophon urei by Phillips (1841); it was recombined as Euphemus urii by M'Coy (1844); it was recombined as Euphemus urei by de Koninck (1883); it was recombined as Euphemites urii by Knight (1941) and Batten (1966); it was recombined as Euphemites urei by Warthin (1930), Weir (1931), Rollins (1975), Pan (1997), Amler and Heidelberger (2003) and Wagner (2023).
