Taxonomy
Geochelone stromeri was named by Meylan and Auffenberg (1986). Its type specimen is SAM-L-13721, a partial shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Lang. E Quarry-Pel.Phos.Mbr., which is in a Miocene/Pliocene coastal sandstone in the Varswater Formation of South Africa.
