Taxonomy
Gomphus petrificatus was named by Hagen (1850). Its type specimen is NHM I 12779, a forewing (basal half of forewing), and it is an impression. Its type locality is Dinton, Vale of Wardour, Middle Purbeck, which is in a Berriasian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal horizon in the Lulworth Formation of the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Aeshna petrificata by Kirby (1890); it was recombined as Mesogomphus petrificatus by Handlirsch (1906); it was recombined as Necrogomphus petrificatus by Nel et al. (1998).
