Protolindeniina was named by Handlirsch (1906).

It was corrected as Protolindeniinae by Cowley (1942); it was reranked as the family Protolindeniidae by Nel et al. (1998).

It was assigned to Gomphidae by Handlirsch (1906), Cowley (1942); and to Petalurida by Nel et al. (1998).
