Taxonomy
Ellipsocephalus was named by Zenker (1833) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Atda-u Cm uMid-l Sepkoski's reference number: 80,81]. It is the type genus of Ellipsocephaloidea, Ellipsocephalidae, Ellipsocephalinae.

It was assigned to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); to Ellipsocephalidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Ellipsocephalinae by Ahlberg (1980), Cederstrom et al. (2022).
