Lixus was named by Fabricius (1801). It is extant. It is the type genus of Lixinae, Lixini.
It was assigned to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1801); to Fracticornes by Latreille (1802); to Curculionidae by Piton (1940); and to Lixini by Bouchard et al. (2011) and Legalov (2015).
