Taxonomy
Tipula carolae was named by Lewis (1973). Its type specimen is R.R.-6-236, a wing, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Ruby River, between Peterson and Morman Creeks, which is in a Whitneyan lacustrine shale in the Renova Formation of Montana.
