Mancalla lucasi was named by Smith (2011). Its type specimen is SDSNH 25237:, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is SDSNH 3202, which is in a Zanclean/Calabrian coastal horizon in the Niguel Formation of California.
