Platynus was named by Bonelli (1810). It is extant. It is the type genus of Platynini.
It was assigned to Carabiques by Dejean (1821); to Platyni by LeConte (1861); to Carabidae by Scudder (1878), Scudder (1890), Scudder (1900) and Wickham (1917); and to Platynini by Tamutis et al. (2011) and Bouchard et al. (2011).
