Nepea was named by Whitehouse (1939) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm uMid-u Sepkoski's reference number: 16,81]. It is not extant. Its type is Nepea narinosa. It is the type genus of Nepeidae.
It was assigned to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Nepeidae by Jell and Adrain (2002), Jago et al. (2004).
