Olenus was named by Dalman (1827) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-l Cm Fran-l Sepkoski's reference number: 16,81]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Olenellus (Olenus) by Ford (1871).

It was assigned to Olenellus by Ford (1871); to Olenidae by Bao and Jago (2000), Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002).
