Onchocephalites was named by Rasetti (1957) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tojo-u Cm mMid-u Sepkoski's reference number: 493].

It was assigned to Ptychopariida by Eddy and McCollum (1998), Sepkoski (2002); and to Ptychopariidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
