Modocia was named by Walcott (1924) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid-u Cm Dres-l Sepkoski's reference number: 80,379].

It was assigned to Corynexochidae by Resser (1936); to Ptychoparioidea by Palmer (1954); to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Marjumiidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
