Taxonomy
Spilaptera was named by Brongniart (1885). Its type is Spilaptera packardi. It is the type genus of Spilapteridea.

It was assigned to Spilapteridae by Handlirsch (1906), Handlirsch (1919), Bolton (1921), Handlirsch (1922), Kukalová (1969), Carpenter (1992), Li et al. (2013), Prokop et al. (2014), Rosová et al. (2022).
