Proapatokephaloides was named by Ergaliev (1980) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Trep Sepkoski's reference number: 459]. It is not extant. Its type is Proapatokephaloides longiformis.
It was assigned to Pterocephaliidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002).
