Taxonomy
Elmis was named by Latreille (1802). It is extant. It is the type genus of Elmidae, Elminae, Elmini, Elmina.

It was assigned to Necrophagi by Latreille (1802); to Elmidae by Schaeffer (1911); to Dryopidae by Statz (1939); and to Elmina by Bouchard et al. (2011) and Kobayashi et al. (2021).
