Taxonomy
Athous was named by Eschscholtz (1829). It is extant. It is the type genus of Athoites.
It was assigned to Elaterinae by Yablokov-Khnzorian (1961); to Elateridae by Birket-Smith (1977); to Athoinae by Wappler (2003); to Denticollini by Barsevskis (2005); to Dendrometrina by Bouchard et al. (2011); and to Dendrometrini by Kundrata et al. (2020), Kundrata et al. (2021).
