Prospectatrix was named by Fortey (1981) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-u O Aren-u Sepkoski's reference number: 378,726]. Its type is Cyclopyge genatenta.

It was assigned to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cyclopygidae by Fortey (1981) and Jell and Adrain (2002).

R. A. Fortey 1981The diagnosis given in the Treatise (Richter & Richter in Moore, 1959) is extended to include cyclopygids with seven thoracic segments, and relatively large fixigenal areas, with concomitantly smaller eyes.
