Protolenella was named by Qian and Yao (1974) [in Lu et al., Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto Sepkoski's reference number: 463]. It is not extant. Its type is Protolenella conica.
It was assigned to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ellipsocephalidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
