Protolenus was named by Matthew (1892) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto-u Cm mMid Sepkoski's reference number: 80,885]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Protolenidae.

It was assigned to Ellipsocephalidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Protoleninae by El Albani et al. (2024).
